Now She's Gone

from Swallow the Anchor by SaltyPaws

about

Truly a folk song, this song dates back to the 19th century broadside ballads, first known as "Farewell He", a maiden's viewpoint after surrendering her virginity. It was brought to familiarity in the US by Jim Kweskin who sang it first in 1961. We've restructured the song, and it has become my coming out ballad.

lyrics

Now she's gone, let her go, let her sink or let her swim
The love we shared has gone like dust in the wind
She's gone across the ocean, to do the best she can
I hope that she finds favor in some far distant land.

Now she's gone, let her go, let her sink or let her swim
Though once I truly loved her, my thoughts of her grow dim
Except those times at sunset, as I walk along the sand
I hope that she finds favor in some far distant land

Now she's gone, let her go, let her sink or let her swim
No longer around my hat is there green upon the brim
With splendor do I wear, a feather in the band
I hope that she finds favor in some far distant land

Now she's gone, let her go, let her sink or let her swim
Happily a-roving I found new love with him.
How can I be so lucky? This love was never planned.
I hope that she finds favor in some far distant land

Now she's gone, let her go, let her sink or let her swim
We've made our lives together, the chances were so slim
Now we walk the beach at sunset, ever hand-in-hand
I hope that she finds favor in some far distant land.

Now she's gone, let her go.

Wherever the boat is in port, you'll find Bentley and Jim joining a jam, at an open mic, or busking a street corner. ... more
